How To: Paint Upholstery: September 16th 2-4pm
Is that really possible?! Yes!!! Painted upholstery is a semi-new concept that many people find hard to grasp. "Isn't it crunchy? Won't it crack? That cannot be durable!" WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
Painted upholstery, WHEN DONE CORRECTLY, is very durable. It will not crack and it is super soft. Trust me--->I have 4 boys, ages 8, 6, 5 and 1. If it can be destroyed, my boys have destroyed it! The set of gray chairs in the photos are actually a pair I originally painted to sell but fell in love with them before I could bring them to the shop, so they have resided in my living room for the past 8 months and are still in pristine condition. They actually have gotten even softer with use. Our pups toenails haven't even left a mark!
"But what does it FEEL like?", you ask. This is the best part. Once painted and waxed, the material feels very much like soft leather (think old leather bomber jacket from Grease). It does not crack, and it is not crunchy.
"Can all materials be painted?" Yes and no. If you are looking for a solid finish, we do not suggest painting chairs with nap (velvet being the worst!). Now, with that said, we have painted a velvet chair before and, as long as you are okay with it being more worn-looking for more of a farmhouse or shabby chic look, the final outcome is fabulous. But, it is impossible to create a solid look as the paint tends to get under the nap of the fibers and creates a variation. All other fabrics to include denim, satin, cotton, leather, etc are great candidates. The firmer the cushion, the better the outcome. However, that does not exclude down or feather cushions as we have painted these as well and they turned out fabulous. These just require a little bit more water and wax. No biggie!
Let us show you the proper way to paint upholstery, so you can go home and drag your grandmother's old recliner out of the garage and give it new life!
At the beginning of the class, you will watch as the professionals at Rustic Chic paint a chair off the retail floor. You will get to see it transform before your eyes. Once we go over the step-by-step tutorial, you will then be supplied with a sample fabric board where you can get hands on with painting upholstery yourself. The board and all paint supplies are provided in the cost of the class. We will be available at that time for any questions.
We offer a 10% discount on all paint products to include brushes the day of the workshop, so this is a great time to stock up on product if you have a particular project in mind!
Our classes tend to fill up quickly so please do not wait to sign up! Be sure to invite a friend and make this a fun girls night out!
